Gérardmer, a commune in the Grand Est region of France, is located in the Vosges department of Lorraine. Nicknamed the Pearl of the Vosges by Victor Hugo's brother, Abel, it is located not far from Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Natural Park. Also a winter sports resort, the commune is known for its landscapes and cultural activities.
Gérardmer, according to historians, was founded in 1285, and has had a long history shared with the Duchy of Lorraine and the abbey of the canonesses of Remiremont. Erected as a parish in the mid-16th century, the commune grew strongly in the 18th century with the arrival of the railway, then with the arrival of Alsatian textile manufacturers, following the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine by Germany.
Although the city suffered greatly from the destruction of World War II, it continues to be popular with tourists for its charm and sports facilities. It still boasts an interesting architectural heritage and exceptional landscapes.
