To begin your exploration, head to the highest point in Montpellier, the famous Promenade du Peyrou, a haven of peace prized by Montpellier residents. Terraced gardens, ideal for strolling, were created at the end of the 17th century, offering incredible views. From the upper terrace, where a beautiful water tower and an equestrian statue of Louis XIV stand, you'll have a superb view of the city's rooftops, the surrounding scrubland, the Pic Saint-Loup, the Cévennes, and even the Pyrenees on a clear day!
A 5-minute walk from the square, you can visit one of Montpellier's most renowned cultural sites: the prestigious Fabre Museum. Its collections of ancient, modern, and contemporary paintings make it one of the most important museums in Europe. Take a moment to explore the Galerie des Colonnes, undoubtedly one of the most majestic rooms on the old exhibition grounds, which offers a remarkable panorama of 18th-century history painting through its large-format paintings.
Further east, heading towards the banks of the Lez, you will reach a modern district characterized by its neoclassical style, that of Antigone, designed by the Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill. Seen from the sky, this atypical complex, which extends over 900 meters in length, is reminiscent of the shape of a key. Explore its futuristic universe and discover its most beautiful squares such as that of the Golden Number, with its water jets, that of Thessaly, with its magnificent fountain reminiscent of ancient Greece, or that of Europe with its arcuate architecture and lawns inviting you to relax.
