The fourth largest city in the Landes region and an important industrial port, Tarnos lies at the mouth of the Adour River, at the gateway to the Basque Country. It is situated on the border of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, not far from Bayonne, Capbreton, Biarritz, and the coast. While the origins of Tarnos are not well documented, it is known that the city existed during the Gallo-Roman period under the name Tarinus. Occupied in the 12th century by the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, the city was notably a stopover for pilgrims on the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago) who traveled along the coastal route. The arrival of the railway in the 19th century and the improvement of maritime transport services at the same time allowed Tarnos to develop, particularly with the establishment of a steelworks.
Still very economically active, the town is also popular with tourists thanks to the charm of its landscapes and its architectural heritage. Tarnos beach is bordered by the largest dune in Europe.
